Talk Overview. Early microscopic images of cells and subcellular organelles were obtained using fixed cells. In this lecture, Dr. Inoue recalls how, in 1947, he built a polarizing light microscope that allowed him to visualize, for the first time, the dynamic mitotic spindle in live cells.
Mitotic spindles constitute the machinery responsible for equidistribution of the genetic material into each daughter cell during cell division. They are transient and hence quite labile structures, changing their morphology even while performing their function.
PMID: 11408572 Feb 26, 2008 The mitotic spindle is a complex mechanical apparatus required for accurate segregation of sister chromosomes during mitosis. We designed a mitotic spindle The spindle-shaped system of microtubules that, during cell division, traverses the nuclear region of eukaryotic cells. Source for information on This video reviews all the steps of mitosis; seeing it all together is a great review at this stage. The kinetochore becomes attached to the mitotic spindle. A microtubule structure that forms during CELL DIVISION. It consists of two SPINDLE POLES, and sets of MICROTUBULES that may include the astral microtubules, the polar microtubules, and the kinetochore microtubules. The position of the mitotic spindle determines the plane of cell cleavage, and thereby daughter cell location, size, and content. Spindle positioning is driven by dynein-mediated pulling forces exerted on astral microtubules, which requires an evolutionarily conserved complex of Gα∙GDP, GPR-1/2 Pins/LGN, and LIN-5 Mud/NuMA proteins. Mitotic rounding requires cortical actin re-modelling, which increases cell stiffness and creates space for spindle formation. Synonyms for mitotic spindle in Free Thesaurus. Antonyms for mitotic spindle.

Mitotic spindles constitute the machinery responsible for equidistribution of the genetic material into each daughter cell during cell division. They are transient and hence quite labile structures, changing their morphology even while performing their function. Mitotic Spindle Apparatus The precise timing and formation of the mitotic spindle is critical to the success of eukaryotic cell division.

Reset The position of this mitotic spindle tells the cell where to divide, allowing each daughter cell to contain its own identical set of DNA. To gain a more detailed view of microtubules in action, researchers designed an experimental system that utilizes an extract of cells from the African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis). The mitotic spindle accurately segregates genetic instructions by moving chromosomes to spindle poles (anaphase A) and separating the poles (anaphase B) so that, in general, the chromosomes and poles are positioned near the centers of the nascent daughter cell products of each cell division.

The mitotic phenotypes caused by these five small molecules included chromosome misalignment, loss of spindle pole organization, changes in spindle shape, and combinations of all three. One of these five compounds was especially interesting.
